Our Story

White Horse Pottery was founded in 2018 by Hannah Whitney, and is located on acreage in Medowie, NSW. I offer regular classes, workshops, and studio space hire, in order to open up the exciting world of pottery to everyone. I aim to accommodate everyone, no matter your age or previous artistic experience

The purpose built, picturesque studio, located on acreage in Medowie is a serene environment fostering creativity and relaxation. Class sizes are kept small to ensure each student receives individual tuition from the instructor. About The Artist

I am a Tasmanian-born ceramic artist, university graduate marine biologist, and long-time horse enthusiast. I began working with clay in my early teenage years when I came across my father’s old pottery wheel, hiding almost forgotten in the back of a shed. I am self-taught, with my early pottery lessons consisting of old video cassettes (VHS) borrowed from the City Library.

In more recent years, I have had the opportunity to refine my skills and learn a wider range of techniques in the presence of other skilled potters and master potters.

I settled in Port Stephens in 2012 and set up my pottery studio in Medowie in December of 2018. My philosophy is ‘if it can be imagined, it can be created’.

About The Studio

White Horse Pottery is a small family owned business, born from a love of nature, art, and creativity.  The studio's name reflects the essence of it's founder. In 2009, a white Arabian horse named 'Osca' came into my life. Rarely are humans so lucky to have such connection and understanding with a member of another species. This 'white horse' fitted so perfectly that it sometimes seemed we shared a soul. When naming the studio, I wanted to capture everything that was important to me. Pottery, art, clay, nature, and most importantly, the White Arabian Horse.
As well as having a cool name, the location and the facility itself are pretty cool too! The studio's location fosters serenity and creativity, and the friendly and inviting atmosphere encourages a rich community spirit. Our purpose built facility offers a number of Venco pottery wheels, and a large selection of glazes.

What you can do at the studio

Hand-building

If this is your first venture into the world of clay, hand-building is a great place to start! Hand building classes are also a great way to mingle and meet other local artists in the Port Stephens community

Wheel throwing

Messy, muddy, and fun, wheel throwing is very hands on, and can be a calming and relaxing experience. It takes years to fully master, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give Wheel Throwing a try.

Clay sculpting

Whether you are a beginner or already have a basic understanding of pottery, if you are after something a bit different, try your hand at this carving or sculpting class. Clay carving is a great way to add a bit of uniqueness to your work

Studio Space

Sometimes it's nice to just sit down with a lump of mud and a spinning metal disc and let your hands shape earth into something beautiful. Studio space hire is perfect for those with prior pottery experience.
