What We Offer
Hand-Building
Get your hands dirty with a fun and interactive
hand building class today. Perfect for beginners, hand building classes are extremely
popular, and require minimal equipment so skills learned in class can be
continued and applied at home. Class sizes are kept small in order to ensure
each participant gets enough attention from the instructor. Hand building
classes are also a great way to mingle and meet other local artists in the Port
Stephens community
Wheel Throwing
Wheel Throwing is an art that has been around for
centuries. It is very hands on, and can be a calming and relaxing experience.
It takes years to fully master, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give Wheel
Throwing a try. Here, we consider each creation a unique artistic expression
given physical shape by the potter’s hands. Call us today to find out more.
Spaces are limited, so it’s best to act fast!
Clay Sculpting
Whether you are a beginner or already have a basic
understanding of pottery, if you are after something a bit different, try your
hand at this carving or sculpting class. Clay carving is a great way to add a
bit of uniqueness to your work. Classes are kept small and students are
encouraged to express their individual artistic style.

Kids activities
After school classes, and school holiday workshops are a great way for kids to explore their creativity in a relaxing environment. Playing with mud is something every child seems drawn to, and with our pottery classes, that ‘mud’ can become something unique that they can treasure forever. As well as pottery skills, children will learn about clay, where clay comes from and how it is different from normal ‘mud’. We also discover how ‘mud’ becomes ‘pottery’.
School holiday workshops
School holiday workshops consist of 2 sessions, held 1 week apart. The minimum age is 9 years, unless accompanied by an adult. Working with clay can be challenging and I am unable to assist young children with their work, therefore I recommend an adult attend with all children under 9 years old.
School holiday classes run for approximately 90 minutes. The first session will be the 'creating' session where we use raw clay and actually make our pottery creations. Children then return the following week to glaze their piece. The children's work then goes into the kiln and is fired to 1200C (this process can take a couple of days). When you collect your item, it will be proper ceramics, just like your kitchen-ware.
After School Classes
After school classes are initially structured around a set 'course', but each child has the freedom to create what they want as they acquire different pottery skills. In the first few weeks, we cover several hand-building techniques, starting with slab-rolling a bowl. We also cover pinch-pots and coil building throughout the term. Children will gain an understanding of how the clay behaves, and what can be achieved by hand building with clay. I find that children all complete tasks at different rates, and as pottery can be similar to art/craft, super creative/detailed kids might choose to work on the same project over a number of weeks, whereas other kids might knock out a new clay creation each week. This is all fine. I aim for my classes to be fun as well as educational.
